Communication for Leaders II

COM 200

Course Description

We write to communicate to others, whether they are colleagues, professionals, or friends. We write to convince others that our position has validity. We write to discover new things about our world as well as ourselves. For that matter, the process of writing is a way of coming to know. Writing can become a medium for self-reflection, self-expression, and communication, a means of coming to know for both the writer and reader. Learning to write requires writing. Writing is an art which can be learned and refined. Ultimately, writing takes practice, and as a writer, you will have opportunities to write both in the classroom as well as outside. The goal for this class is to give you enough practice writing so that you will become more effective writers by the end of the semester than you were at the start.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Produce writing which meets the commonly accepted standards of edited American English.
  • Improve your control of the writing process.
  • Improve your awareness of audience, situation and purpose in writing.
  • Utilize specific examples and explanations in the student’s writing.
  • Write logical and coherent texts.
  • Understand how language informs and shapes our culture and society as well as our everyday lives and practices.
